Project 1: Color as medium
I searched online for different pictures of beach scenes and I came across this beautiful photograph of a beach in Italy. I immediately thought about changing the colors to mimic an Alien like world. Using Adobe Photoshop, I reimagined the image by altering the colors of each person, the beach water, and the background individually, drawing inspiration from Avatar and its vibrant use of unique color palettes for each person. I created two distinct versions of the photo: one rendered using RGB and the other in CMYK, exploring how color modes can transform the same scene into entirely different visual experiences.
Project 2: Cutting Edge
Inspired by the iconic scene in Pride and Prejudice where Darcy and Elizabeth finally meet in the meadow and admit their feelings for each other, I decided to recreate this moment by laser cutting the image onto a piece of wood. Unfortunately, the process didn’t turn out as I had envisioned, the laser cutter didn’t indent the image deeply enough, resulting in the shapes and faces appearing very light and faint. Nevertheless the project to some degree captured the emotion and atmosphere of that memorable scene.
Project 3: Steal this book
Given that this project was assigned around Halloween, I wanted to add a bit of a spooky twist to it. Since we were instructed to use AI and "steal things" from other sources, I drew inspiration from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I designed a new front cover by adding ornaments to mimic stars in the sky, presents at the bottom of the hill, and created a dark, purple-hued background to capture a whimsical, eerie atmosphere. I then instructed ChatGPT to write a novel version of the story, which I brought to life by formatting it in InDesign. I input different images from the movie and adjusted the layout to give it the feel of a storytime picture book for children, creating a short storybook.
Final Project: Four Threads of Love
Given the creative freedom to design anything using InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, I decided to create a small, heartfelt book dedicated to my sister. I drew inspiration from the design of Jane Austen book covers and combined it with colors of lavender flowers, which influenced both the color palette and overall design. The book’s colors are soft shades of lavender, with floral patterns that I thought would make the design feel more charming and visually appealing. I wanted the book to have a vintage, timeless quality, which is why I chose elements that reflected a classic, romantic style. The book features four pages, each containing a heartfelt letter—one from my mom, dad, older sister Alejandra, and myself. Instead of printing the letters directly on the pages, I wanted to add a sense of texture and dimension, so I printed each letter individually, cut them out, and hand-glued them onto the pages, creating a layered, collage-like effect. This gave the book a personal, handmade touch. My goal was to make this book not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful. Something that felt personal and full of love while maintaining a vintage and nostalgic feel throughout.
